Long time no talk 👀 At HUMANS, we launched the «Debugging Web3» AMA series with solid builders whose mission is to fix what’s not working in the industry. Last time we had a convo with Jason Desimone, the founder of Rove, and here's what we learned.
Jason's background: leading teams in implementing blockchain solutions for organizations like the United Nations, American Express, the Ethereum Foundation, Coinbase, and more.
Goal: Help creators (artists, brands, and promoters) better engage with their target audience. And reduce entry barriers to the Web3 space for the masses.
Actions taken: Develop a mobile app that utilizes Web3 technology with Web2 user experience: blockchain ticketing, on-chain loyalty rewards, and smart contracts.
The Rove World app was launched in January 2023, and here are some honest stats:
• 23K on-chain transactions
• 11K tickets claimed
• 3K NFTs staked (in-app)
• 5K iOS users (54% conversion rate)
• 2K Android users (73% conversion rate)
Okay, that's interesting. But why Web3, just for the hype?
It turns out, it's not. Jason explained that going on-chain with smart contracts was crucial. This approach allowed them to control ticket resale values and enable artists to connect directly with their fans, retaining more value. On-chain data helps identify loyal fans, offer exclusive perks, and much more.
What about the «debugging Web3» part?
It's no secret that we've been talking about onboarding one billion users to Web3 for the past 3 or 4 years, but it hasn't quite happened yet. If you're not crypto-native, there's a certain barrier to entry: you don't really know how to avoid scams or who to deal with, and it's easy to get overwhelmed with the sheer volume of info.
It seems that Jason has found his way to remove those barriers: by going mobile first and building an app that people can interact with as naturally as they do in their everyday lives:
• Wallet creation via email login => no need to deal with seed phrases
• Gasless transactions => No crypto needed
• In-app purchases / credit card integration
But maybe its all due to successful partnerships?
It’s time to mention another significant figure — Phil Hoelting, a Partner at Rove, who has experience in organizing music festivals and film production, with a strong interest in Web3's potential for art. Thanks to his efforts, Rove partnered with Tommy Hilfiger himself during New York Fashion Week in 2022. They created the official NFT for him => 2K attendees minted the free Tommy Factory NFT on their phone in under a minute.
It’d be a sin not to showcase such a case study in a pitch deck and across socials, don’t you think?
Speaking of pitch decks and fundraising
Rove raised $4 million. When asked about tips for attracting good investments, Jason shares: the approach to fundraising depends on the stage you're at.
Pre-seed: Focus on your idea and team. Seek investors who align with your vision and offer strategic support.
Seed: Showcase your product and traction. Present a clear plan for leveraging investors' money to grow your product.
Early-stage fundraising, however, is a tough one. It often involves selling the potential of your idea and team, even before having a product. It's about exciting investors, leveraging your vision, and playing this game of making investors intrigued about your product, even if you don't have one yet.
