π The Etrog upgrade for Polygon zkEVM is coming to mainnet
Once the upgrade goes live, Polygon zkEVM will likely be the first ZK rollup to reach this milestone β a engineering feat achieved in less than one year. The network will evolve into a Type 2 ZK-EVM, i.e., an EVM-equivalent ZK rollup!
βοΈ What is this important for the blockchain?
- A Type 2 ZK-EVM offers the optimal balance between making it easy for devs to deploy, while still being fast and cheap
β‘ What does this mean for devs?
- Polygon zkEVM has, in effect, met Vitalik's criteria for a Type 2. So you can deploy your code on Polygon zkEVM exactly as it is on Ethereum β just copy-paste and go, no additional auditing or modifications necessary

POL, the technical upgrade to MATIC, is hyperproductive, powering anecosystem of zk-based L2 chains via a native re-staking protocol.
POL holders will be able to validate multiple chains and perform multiple roles on each of those chains (sequencing, zk proof generation, participation in data availability committees etc.)

1) Is there anything I need to do today as a Polygon PoS, Polygon zkEVM user or MATIC holder?
Nothing.
This upgrade does not change active systems on either the Polygon PoS or Polygon zkEVM networks at this time. All existing contracts will function as previously designed.
If you would like to join the governance process and give your input, you can join the discussion on the forum.
2) Is there anything I need to do today as a node operator or staker?
Nothing.
You can provide feedback on the proposed changes in the PIPs and monitor Github and the forum for new node software versions to remain compatible with your given chain when PIPs are approved by the community.
3) Is there anything I need to do today as an application or tooling developer?
Nothing.
Please engage with POL integrations on the testnet, review the PIPs, provide feedback on the proposed changes and analyze if any changes break your smart contracts. Developers for applications on the Polygon PoS should not see any breaking changes.
