The biggest developing narrative we see today is that on the regulatory front with the US officially sanctioning Tornado Cash. This, in addition to recent developments by the US Department of Justice and SEC to label certain cryptos as securities highlight that crypto is at the stage where this type of regulation feels inevitable. The suits are coming. Crypto exchanges and entities are also in the process of declaring sides in the upcoming potential PoW forking of Ethereum after the merge

Total Crypto market cap falls below $1T going into today’s FOMC meeting. The US Federal Reserve is widely expected to increase the US federal funds rate by 75 basis points – from 1.75% to 2.5% - bringing rates back to an effectively neutral level to combat rising inflation. This week saw the crypto markets slowly grind upwards whilst we see the usual flutter of news, developments and fundraising. We learned that Three Arrows Capital owes $3.5B to 27 different companies. Tesla sold 75% of its BTC holdings - adding $936M of cash to its balance sheet. Curve Finance founder implied a stablecoin is on its way. We saw the Launch of Polygon zkEVM, zkSync 2.0 Mainnet Launch announced for October and Scroll zkEVM-based zkRollup introduced in race to be the first EVM-compatible ZK rollup to market. We saw a precedent set with three charged in first ever cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme.

OpenSea’s Solana Launchpad debut saw weak performance. Mojang Studios banned Minecraft NFT integrations with Epic Games signaling they would not follow suit. Launching NFTs on Uniswap is coming with full Sudoswap support. Big Web3 platforms launch the Open Metaverse Alliance. LinkedIn co-founder launching DALL-E 2 Solana-based NFTs and Usain Bolt helps launch ‘move-to-earn’ NFT fitness platform Step App. Yuga Labs Otherside Metaverse initial tests saw positive feedback. Dubai’s unveils metaverse strategy. We're seeing blockchain NFT sales slowly recover however still down considerably on the monthly level. DeFi TVL is recovering as well.

Despite the ongoing bear market, the crypto space continues to stay aflutter with activity. Teams, projects, protocols, firms and brands - both big and small - continue to raise money, build, and forge new paths forward. This week we saw: U.S. CPI rose 9.1% in June, the largest increase since November 1981. Three Arrows Capital is continuing its liquidation process. Celsius Network confirmed they’ve filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, revealing they hold $4.3B of assets, $5.5B of liabilities with a $1.2B hole in its balance sheet and the Vermont Financial Regulator saying Celsius is deeply insolvent and was operating without regulatory oversight.

We finally received a tentative date for the upcoming ETH merge on September 19. Polygon saw strong performance and was announced as one of the six participants in the 2022 Disney Accelerator program as well as seeing 48 different crypto projects formerly based on the Terra ecosystem having migrated over to Polygon. Multicoin Capital announced its third, $430M venture fund - just one of the many usual raises this week. Glassnode analytics also indicates that the bitcoin market has many hallmarks of a deep capitulation and a late stage bear market in play. With all the recent forced selling due to liquidations from large firms over with for now, could we be ready to see a relief rally soon?

In the world of NFTs and the metaverse, GameStop released their public beta NFT marketplace which saw it in 2 days surpass Coinbase’s NFT marketplace all time trading volume. OpenSea lays off 20% of its staff, citing the crypto winter. Snapchat will soon allow users to turn their NFTs into filters. Other large names making waves in the metaverse and NFT space this week included: The MLB, The NFL, Tony Hawk x The Sandbox, Netflix x Stranger Things, Bill Murray x Coinbase NFT marketplace, Ducati x XRP ledger, Warner Records x Bose, Samsung Electronics x Roblox, Dead or Alive creator, Jason Wu, Old Navy x BAYC and more. Brands are still keen to associate themselves with this sector.

As usual, funding this week was heavy, seeing Magic Eden, the largest NFT marketplace on the Solana blockchain, launching an investment arm to back the web3 gaming sector. Hang, an NFT brand membership platform, closing its $16M Series A funding round led by Paradigm. Animoca Brands completing a $75.32M raise at a pre-money valuation of $5.9B. $30M round led by a16z to develop a social networking protocol called Farcaster, plus many more raises, all strengthening the recurring theme of investment into blockchain, web3, NFTs and metaverse.
